Flukkra is Shaetlan for ‘snowflake’. The word is not found in Orkney or in mainland Scots varieties, but it can be found in Faroese flykra, Danish flok and Swedish flocka, where it means also means ‘snowflake’. In all these languages, including Shaetlan, it is a loan from Middle Dutch/Middle Low German vlocke ‘(snow)flake’. It probably entered these vocabularies due to the Hanseatic trade.
